Steve Choe

Steve Choe is Associate Professor and Director of the Global Creative Industries programme. His areas of research and teaching include film and media theory, philosophy, and the cinemas of Germany and Korea. Prior to joining the staff at the University of Hong Kong, he has taught at the University of Iowa and San Francisco State University.

Dr. Choe is the author of Afterlives: Allegories of Film and Mortality in Early Weimar Germany (Bloomsbury, 2014), Sovereign Violence: Ethics and South Korean Cinema in the New Millennium (Amsterdam University Press, 2016), and ReFocus: The Films of Williams Friedkin (Edinburgh, 2021). He is also a co-editor, with Mayumo Inoue, of Beyond Imperial Aesthetics: Theories of Art and Politics in East Asia (HKU Press, 2019) and is the editor of the Palgrave Handbook for Violence in Film and Media (Palgrave, 2022). He currently serves as a co-editor of the Journal of Japanese and Korean Cinema and is an editor of the Critical Asian Cinemas books series, published with Amsterdam University Press.
